She is in the middle of an election campaign and despite her comfortable lead in polls, Martin Schulz, the Social Democratic candidate who is challenging her, recently amped up his criticism of her for not standing up to Trump. But he is still avoiding the question of whether he accepts Putin's denial that Russia was responsible for meddling in the 2016 election.
Trump on Sunday said he had "strongly pressed" Putin twice about election meddling during their first face-to-face meeting last Friday in Hamburg on the sidelines of G20 summit but did not dispute Moscow's claim that he had accepted Putin's denial of involvement, The New York Times reported. I think that he took it into account and agreed.
Trump's successes included what was being characterized as a warm, engaged meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a partial cease-fire deal on Syria, and a pledge to speed up a trade deal with Britain.
In a series of tweets following the weekend G-20 summit, Trump also appeared to suggest that reports about members of the U.S. intelligence community unanimously concluding that Russia meddled in the race are not accurate. But the summit's final communiqué laid bare the U.S. leader's remaining differences with some G-20 leaders on climate change and a reaction to their perception of Trump's America First policy, one widely perceived as isolationist. Nothing will be done until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved!
But Trump and his allies appear to relish his volatility and isolation.
Conservatives in the U.S. were indeed buoyed by Trump's speech in Warsaw, Poland, which marked perhaps his most comprehensive articulation of how he views America's role in the world. He praised Polish resilience and called upon Western nations to jointly combat forces that threaten "to erase the bonds of culture, faith and tradition that make us who we are".
Merkel said that it was especially difficult to negotiate with Trump on trade and climate issues.
The conservative editorial page at The Wall Street Journal called the address "Trump's defining speech".
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 9, 2017The Obama administration issued sanctions in late December as a response to Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Hours before his meeting with Putin, he tweeted that "everyone" at the G-20 was talking about why John Podesta, a top adviser to Clinton, had "refused to give the DNC server to the FBI and the CIA".
The Russians denied any interference in the U.S. electoral process.
The U.S. president and his entourage left Hamburg immediately after meeting with Xi.
It was Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin a day earlier that made headlines at the two-day summit.
The meeting is likely to bring returns for Putin at home.
Putin's takeaway was different.
A resolution on the Group of 20's positions published at the end of the summit singles out the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which caps emission levels. And the Sunday morning flurry of tweets from Trump did little to clarify.
