Donald Trump is not the only unpredictable leader in Paris today

Perhaps it was all a bit of stagecraft.

Also featuring a bi-national fly-past of American F16 and French Rafale jets symbolising military cooperation in the Middle East and elsewhere, the occasion followed a day of talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, a first ladies' tour of Paris, and a dinner for the four at a restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. Like literally did not let go.

In any case, it will be a nice respite for Trump from the mess at home, where his son, Donald Trump Jr., has been fielding questions about why he met with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign.

BEARDSLEY: History professor Kaspi says given that German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not have a close relationship with Trump and that British Prime Minister Theresa May is politically weakened, Macron now has a special role in U.S. -European relations.

In their letter, the 10 Senators said they travelled to Paris in 2015 to participate in the 21st Conference of Parties and engage in the development of the Paris Agreement. But like the President, he pitched voters on a demolition of the status quo and a French take on Trump's promise to "drain the swamp".

When asked about Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris climate deal, Macron soberly reiterated his own position, but didn't press or attempt to publicly shame his counterpart.

"Mr Trump's presence at my side is a sign of an enduring friendship and I want to thank him", Macron said in a speech afterwards.

The Paris visit, however, seemed to establish the inklings of a working relationship between these two seemingly incompatible figures.

First, there was yet another dramatic handshake, this one suggesting more of a sense of comity instead of animosity. The attack came some 48 hours after the people of the country had launched the French Revolution.

Third, unlike Trump who has evidenced little inclination to reach beyond his core Republican Party base, President Macron is determined to overthrow the old French political party order and reach deep into his adversaries' political bases to forge a new, enduring political order.

In France, the jury was out as to Macron's precise motives in inviting - and embracing - Trump for an impromptu visit this week.

You can see the spot, but there is nothing of the Bastille left there.

"Emmanuel Macron wants to try to prevent the president of the United States being isolated", Christophe Castaner, a spokesman for Macron, told French reporters this month. He plans to prepare duck confit, using locally sourced products from Grow Dat Youth Farm.

When it was stormed, the Bastille was found to house only seven prisoners - four forgers, two "lunatics" and one "deviant" aristocrat, the Comte de Solages. French prosecutor François Molins, leading the inquiry, has described the perpetrator as "a young man completely uninvolved in religious issues and not a practicing Muslim, who ate pork, drank alcohol, took drugs and had an unbridled sex life".

But as Castaner put it: "We can do two things". Macron was due to fly to Nice to commemorate the victims after bidding Trump farewell in Paris.

President Donald Trump watched United States and French soldiers march together through the Paris sunshine on Friday in a double celebration marking 100 years since the United States entered World War One and France's annual Bastille Day holiday.
