The Democrats are lost in Trump hatred to the point where a large part of the country thinks that they and the mainstream media are deranged.
But the new approach unraveled within hours.
Conservatives and moderates in the House managed to bridge their differences and narrowly pass a bill. Adam Jentleson, who was deputy chief of staff to the former majority leader tweeted a thread of comments Monday night suggesting that Republicans were launching a "coordinated rebellion" against the Majority Leader.
The stunning collapse on Monday of Republican legislation to replace Obamacare has forced Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to switch gears and try to pass a straight repeal of the health law that would take effect in two years. The caregiver said she heard the faint crying early Sunday morning and first thought it was a cat. About 20 million Americans gained insurance coverage through the law.
McConnell also promised a vote in "the very near future" on the doomed attempt to repeal much of Obamacare with no replacement.
Mayor de Blasio, meanwhile, hailed the Senate Republicans' inability to pass a repeal measure.
Lee's office said he would vote for a procedural motion to get to final passage of gutting Obamacare but declined a request to interview the senator.
The president suggested a different course: Do nothing on the assumption that Obamacare's flaws will deepen, giving Republicans leverage. Reaction in the stock market was muted, and analysts said the expectation for business-friendly legislation out of Washington is all but priced out of the stock market.
"Anybody in government or in business knows that stability is really key", Dayton, Ohio, Mayor Nan Whaley, a Democrat, told NBC News on Tuesday. The current establishment-endorsed plan to replace Obamacare (with what is essentially Obamacare) is dead in the water and Republican leaders in Congress are only going to get it passed by amending the legislation leftward to please Democrats.
"We have consistently urged that there be immediate, certain funding for the cost-sharing reduction program, which helps those most in need with out-of-pocket costs when they access medical care".
"I am a product of rural Kansas", Moran said July 6 to an overflow crowd in Palco, a small town north of Hays. "Congress needs to step up, Congress needs to do their job, and Congress needs to do their job now".
But others quickly took aim at Republican congressional leadership.
(3) April/May: Let the House write a far-right version, then change it.
Consumers would feel the impact immediately if Republicans, stung by their health care failure, repeal "Obamacare" with no replacement.
The Los Angeles Times interviewed executives across America in May and concluded that health insurers were planning big rate hikes in 2017 - "and they blame Trump", the paper added.
A last-ditch effort saw the Trump administration dispatch vice-president Mike Pence, health secretary Tom Price and budget director Mick Mulvaney to the annual governors' conference in Rhode Island at the weekend to rally sceptical governors. "Rather than repeating the same failed partisan process yet again, Republicans should work with Democrats on a bill that lowers premiums, provides long-term stability to the markets, and improves our health care system". It also gives Trump some cover to declare publicly that Iran is violating "the spirit" of the deal, preserving a potent argument should he ultimately decide to exit the pact.
