Signs have been detected that North Korea's military is preparing for winter drills that will begin in December, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Usually, the North's winter training runs until April.

The presence of three US aircraft carriers off the Korean Peninsula is pushing the region closer to nuclear war, according to a North Korean letter to the United Nations secretary-general, CNN reports.

"In the midst of concerns about the rise of protectionism and inward-looking orientation in the world in order to enhance predictability of the economies of the region and the world to mitigate volatilities and to maintain and strengthen the free trading system, the significance of financial cooperation between the ASEAN plus three becomes increasingly greater", Abe said in Japanese.

He directly addressed North Korea in a speech at South Korea's parliament on Wednesday, telling Kim Jong Un: "Do not underestimate us".

At Panmunjom, North Korean soldiers wearing lapel pins with the images of late North Korean leaders often use binoculars to monitor visitors from the South. They stand only several meters (yards) away from tall South Korean soldiers wearing aviator sunglasses and standing motionless like statues.

On Monday the soldier sped towards the border in a "peace village" in the heavily-guarded demilitarised zone, in a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Korean Air Lines Co., the national flag carrier, said Tuesday that its third-quarter net profit plunged 88 percent from a year earlier on foreign-exchange losses. The statement also referred to Trump as a "dotard", an insulting term for old people who are going senile.

From a long-term perspective, the ministry also hopes to eventually invite North Korea to join the forum, but the communist country has not been invited this year, given the current security tensions concerning the country, a ministry official said.

A JCS official quoted by Yonhap news agency said the South's soldiers heard a gunshot and then retrieved the unarmed soldier in the mid-afternoon. In Monday's incident, it wasn't known if the North continued firing after the defector was officially in the southern part of the Joint Security Area.

He defected from a North Korean guard post nearby and was being treated in hospital. That prompted Washington to send nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to intimidate the North before the adversaries pulled back from the brink of conflict. In June 2017, he was returned by North Korea to the US in a coma and died a week later.

The defection came at a time of heightened tension over North Korea's nuclear weapons program, and could escalate animosities between the rival countries. "The problem is that South Korea is blindly following the U.S. which is intent on the scheme for a nuclear war".
